Certain skin conditions may be blamed on genes, however, there is much we can do to improve our skin. Therefore, a good skin-care routine, one that includes moisturizing, can solve itching, flaking, and drab-looking skin.
Factors that lead to dry skin
The skin produces oil, also called sebum, which functions to retain moisture. Over-washing, or using coarse soaps, can strip too much sebum from the face, leaving it subject to dryness. Dry skin appears dull, can feel tight, and there may even be some fine lines visible. If the condition worsens, this could lead to bleeding and cracking, conditions normally associated with skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis.
Select a moisturizer for your skin type
A good moisturizer not only provides your skin with moisture − it holds the moisture in. There are various types of moisturizers on the market. Selecting one will depend on your skin type, as the wrong one can negatively affect your skin.
- Oily skin - Oily skin contains more sebum that other skin types, yet this skin type still needs moisturizing. However, oil-based products will be unsuitable for the skin. Instead, oil-free products that contain hyaluronic acid and glycerin, will work well.
- Dry skin - People with dry skin need a moisturizer with an oily base. Products containing jojoba oil, shea butter, or coconut oil, are best. However, if your skin is severely dry, or if you are suffering from eczema, try products that contain lactic acid, lanolin, mineral oil, or hyaluronic acid.
- Sensitive skin - Sensitive skin is normally an indication of a weak immune system, however, it may also mean that the sufferer is easily irritated by certain ingredients. Thus, unscented, hypoallergenic creams are best. Also avoid ingredients such as retinoids, or alpha hydroxy acid.
- Normal skin - A normal skin is neither too oily nor too dry. It is still best to opt for a light, non-greasy moisturizer, that contains lightweight oils, or is silicone based.
- Combination skin - Having oily skin on the forehead and nose but normal skin on the cheeks is known as combination skin. Less product should be applied to the oily parts; but add some cream to the dryer areas, as you would to a normal skin.
Change your moisturizer as the weather changes
Once you have identified your particular skin type, you can select a moisturizer that will give you the best results. Do not forget to adjust it as the climate changes. For instance, in the winter, you might need a heavier cream than in the summer.
It may be confusing finding the right product, however, conducting some sample tests on your skin will help you select the one right product for your skin. This is also a good idea if the creams are pricey and you are sensitive to specific ingredients. Testing on the neck, for instance, could be a way of determining whether the product is right, or whether you need to look for something else.
